I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers for Flash.

Flash died on Friday January 9th 2009 ~ 1:00 am of acute renal failure.

On Monday December 29th, after running 3 perfect runs at a trial in Ohio, she vomited in the car on the way home. We went to the vet on Tuesday and they treated her for an upset stomach. When she was still vomiting on Wednesday we went back to the vet. They did an x-ray to make certain there wasn't an obstruction, there wasn't, and they gave her an anti-vomiting medication. New Year's day she just wasn't herself, so we called Mark Rusley and arranged to have him see her the next morning. Mark took blood and urine samples and the initial exam of the urine showed casts, which is an indication of a kidney problem. We went straight from Mark's office to their Dundee location which has a critical care vet to admit Flash to get her started on an IV. Later that day Mark called with the blood results, they weren't good, Flash had kidney disease. This began the worst week in our lives. Flash stayed at the Dundee location being treated for two days at which time the vets suggested we get her to the Veterinary Specialty Center in Buffalo Grove for potential dialysis. We transferred Flash there on Sunday morning. Flash was constantly being monitored, all types of tests were being done including blood work and urine testing. They were not only tracking her progress but also trying to determine a cause. We were there constantly. On Monday evening during a visit we had a glimmer of hope as Flash was barking when you said "want to watch TV" and "Geico guy" and even gave us five. That was last time we saw a glimmer of the Flash we knew. On Tuesday and Wednesday Flash was putting up a great fight as we saw some of her kidney blood values getting better. On Thursday things started to spiral down. Although some of her blood values were getting better we were not seeing the attitude improvement we were hoping for. We were waiting for urine results due Friday am, to determine her treatment plan. We spent almost the entire day and night with her sitting on the floor, petting her and telling her what a good girl she was. Her fight ended around 1:00 Friday morning.

We still have no idea how she came down with this disease. The experts believe is was auto-immune. She was tested for all the common causes and they all came back negative. We will probably never know what took her from us way too soon. Flash was only 5 1/2 years old.

Flash's agility career was outstanding. Most recently, she just earned her MACh6 at Hounds. She made it into the finals at the AKC Invitational finishing in 7th place and earned the Top Border Collie medal. She also earned her ADCH, was in the 22" steeplechase finals twice, and made the finals at last years AKC Nationals.

Most importantly she was my best friend. She was my heart and soul. She was my constant companion and even came to school with me on many occasions. She made the days easier knowing that we would be spending time together going to class, an agility trial or just hanging out together. When she was a puppy she learned to sit with me and watch TV. She had her favorite commercials and programs and would bark at the TV and look at me as if saying "did you see that?". She loved playing in the water "getting the fish" in the baby pools or swimming is the large pool taking breaks on the raft. She was always a happy dog and it made me happy seeing the smile on her face. She was my "baby dog" and Thunder's special friend.

It was a privilage to have spent 5 years with Flash. She was an exceptionally loyal friend and companion. I hope she is in a better place; swimming, running and watching TV. I miss her alot.

Thanks again and I hope that none of you ever have to experience the quick loss of a young dog.

We are so sad to hear the news of Flash's passing. We get to spend so few years with our special companions and to see one taken so young is heart breaking. Rest assured that she is in a better place (with a Tiny in her mouth). I'm sure she has already trained someone in the x-pen game.

  4. I know there is nothing to say at a time like this. Nothing seems to help.
When I remember Flash, I'll remember her at the Summer Splash last year, when I played "Flash's turn/Elan's turn" with her and Elan. That was the first time I really met her and saw what a great little dog she was. You are all so lucky to have been loved by Flash.

  7. I ONLY WANTED YOU
    They say memories are golden
    well maybe that is true.
    I never wanted memories,
    I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
    a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
    you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
    no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
    and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
    and bring you back again.

    Our family chain is broken,
    and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
    the chain will link again.

    Dogspeed.

  20. Dear Pam,
Seeing you with Flash was an awesome reminder of what a special Dog and a special Person can do for each other.
I remember watching you with her at a trial in Tampa a few years ago- the entire audience watched in stunned silence as this little dynamo stormed the course. Her intensity and focus on you was breathtaking. Watching her was like watching a shooting star.
Flash had a such a funny, quirky personality and clearly experienced more of life everyday than most of us do in a lifetime. I remember hours of her running on the beach and asking for more. You were indeed the best companions each other could have had.
I am so sorry for your tragic loss. We are thinking of you, Sue, T-pup, Elan, and Neo. I know you will cherish the memories you have of her forever.

  70. I'm sitting here with tears running down my face after ready the blog on Flash. That is so incredibly tragic and sad. I don;t know if you would know me or not- I have one of Cindy's Ariba puppies -Cruise-the little split face. I thought Cruise and Flash kind of looked alike. I was ony ever at a few trials that Flash and Pam were at too-but I so admired Flash and Pam-they were amazing to watch I wanted me & Cruise to look just like them.
I am so sorry for your loss-what and incredible career they had in their short time together - the agility community will sure miss that team.

  71. What tragic news! Pam and you must be devastated. Flash was such a great little dog - a real flaming star. I remeber puppy Flash throwing her toys out of the X-pen so someone would throw them back to her.

So many memories - so may pictures of fabulous runs. Flash had a wonderful life, full of what she loved to do and the people who loved her. Over much too soon, of course. All dogs should be so lucky as to have Pam as an owner and handler.

  72. Pam and Sue,
I can't even breath my hear is ripping out for you. There are no words because sorry isn't even enough, not even close. There is no understanding and I know where you are right now, I really do. SHock, I know, a kind of wandering aboutnnot knowing how to even eat. I don't remember much from the day Bailey died except for the phone call in the dark and taking the dogs over to say goodbye,, the look on Zip's face and the non understanding of what had happened and I could not explain because I couldn't understand either. For a long time and even still I wonder how I could not have known that Bailey was sick, he woke up withwhat looked like the flu and never came home again. He was my soul, how did I not know this was growing inside of him? I sill imagine a better outcome from tiem to time and see his smiling face waiting for me at the hospital. Bailey will be come 2 years this Feb 2 adn still for unknown reasons I still just start crying form time to time. I miss him gitting old. I prayed that none of my friends would ever know what it was like to loose like that.

I don't have to tell you these things you know them. Flash was a wonderful girl, amazing partner, a wonderful character to make you laugh. And like her name, she lived her life that way I guess, burned brilliantly and quickly. I loved watching her run with you Pam, cheered for you, we were big fans.

Shortly after Bailey passed a judge at a trial said to us these words. (I stood bawling and had to leave the ring, no one knew why.) "You go along and hte ribbons seem so important but a day will come when you would trade allthe ribbons in the world for just one more run, just one more run. I am so sorry for you loss, so sorry that this happened to all of you. Flash will be missed by all of us. My heart aches for you.

  79. I don't know what to say......there is nothing to make it better. Flash was amazing, but you know that already. You and she had an obvious kinship that so many humans are not so lucky to ever experience. Five years is not nearly enough....it seems so unfair to have been given such a gift as her and have her taken from you so soon....but as you said you do treasure what you had. Hugs. I pray that Flash will shine down on you as a ray of sunshine with each sunny day, that the warmth of that ray of sun is a reminder that she is the warmth in so many smiles you have made over the years togather! I pray that each drop of rain that falls from the sky is a constant reminder of her in the way she will make a little plant grow (to make someone smile like the 2 of you did!) I pray that each wisp of wind is a reminder of Flash as she ripped around a course with massive amounts of speed and power in her little frame that made us all go WOW!!!!

The 2 of you are a special team that I am privileged to have watched, competed against and gotten handily whipped by with your grace and your abilities! You have allowed so many of us to watch and ENJOY YOUR RIDE over the years!

May God Bless you both until you meet again!

  90. Dear Pam and Sue,

I just counldn't believe when I heard about your loss of Flash. As there is nothing I can say that would ease your pain, I will just say that after losing Alice young, I totally do understand. People always say you must greive, "say goodbye", and then move along. I don't believe that at all. I never want to say goodbye, and never will. They will always be there, with you, and be waiting on the day that we return to be with them. Take comfort in that thought, and know that for her brief time her you both were her "heaven on earth".

I must admit for a selfish reason ...there was "something" about her that reminded me of Hamlet. :) I mean that in a GOOD way. :-) Perhaps it was her absolute LUST for agility or maybe it was the special bond that was so EVIDENT between you and her.. 105. Sorry to hear about Flash. Read it Saturday morning and that is all I could think about.

Not fair. My best memory of Flash was when she was in an ex-pen and kept throwing the ball out of it .... which of course was not easy task to fling over the fence .. but she was determined not be be ignored. :)

She was special. It is something to bring a pup home when they are only 7 weeks old.... but it is something more special to have them with you from day 1.. The bond seem so much stronger. It is like you read each others minds.

Pam and Flash were always one. That was very apparent.

There are not words to express the saness that in your household with a big part of it missing.

The only consolation is that you find out that the are many more people out there who are really your friends in this time of need. Gain support from them... they really do care and are the bigger picture of who we are as a community and the ourpouring of caring.

I's so glad to have you as friends. You really showed me how much you cared when I was in a time of need

You are both in my thoughts. I bet Misha and Flash are having a great time swimming. :)

  106. Pam and Sue,

Brad and I were shocked and saddened to read of the passing of Flash. We witnessed her MACH6 at Hounds for the Holidays just one short month ago. We remember when she was born. We watched her compete thoughout the the years of her life. She was a pleasure to watch. She was such a "happy" dog. I believe she got that from Thunder. Yes, I believe a Golden can influence the life of a border just as her mother Elan did.

When we lose such a young dog it is like losing a child... our hopes, dreams and aspirations seen to be ripped from within us. It doesn't seen "fair" and it isn't. All we can do is go forward taking baby steps, one step at a time, until we are able to walk again.

May God be with you as you take those steps forward. Remember, we are all here for you. Take strength form teh agility community. We are all"family"

Every now and then, one really grabs your heart especially hard and you never can let go.
